What is IBS?
IBS is associated with the whole spectrum of digestive complaints, from flatulence, bloating and constipation to diarrhoea and stomach pain. 1 in 5 people in the UK alone are affected by Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Anyone can get it, at any age, but it is twice as common in women as in men and usually first develops during your twenties.
Types of IBS
IBS-C - IBS with constipation causes hard, possibly painful stools. Your GP might encourage you to increase your daily fibre intake via either including more wholegrains in your diet, take daily supplements or in some cases both. An increase in fibre will often help soften stools making them more comfortable to pass.
IBS-D - IBS with diarrhoea causes loose watery stools or diarrhea. Your GP should recommend a dietician or nutritionist to work with you to eliminate foods that are aggravating this condition & recommend eating smaller, more frequent meals.
IBS-M - If your symptoms are not consistent with Constipation or Diarrhoea, but tend to suffer with bouts of both, you would fall into the Mixed category. Your GP should recommend you consult a dietician or nutritionist to develop an "Elimination Diet" to discover which foods are responsible for your symptoms.
IBS and Gut Bacteria
Friendly bacteria play a very important role in the gut as they are responsible for nutrient absorption, protecting the body from disease causing pathogens (Including boosting our immune systems), assisting in digestion and more.
There are over a thousand species of gut bacteria living in the gut and the balance between good and bad bacteria is very delicate. Nutrition plays a huge part to ensure this balance is unbroken ensuring bacteria are provided with steady growth conditions and a constant stream of nutrients.
