Christmas – the season of goodwill, good times and good food, but for many of us the good food plays havoc with our digestive system making us feel quite uncomfortable.

Xmas Beat The Bloat

We are surrounded by tempting festive foods and drinks from rich Christmas puddings & mince pies to mulled wine & processco, not forgetting the brussel sprouts. We look forward to these foods all year with shops tempting us from as early as the month of October, but then eating them can often causes us a range of digestive issues including flatulence and bloating, particularly when eaten in excess!

Due to these festive food goodies Christmas has now been cited as the ‘windiest season of the year’! Here at Bimuno, we conducted a survey which found that over 20% of people in the UK even admitted to having arguments or falling out over flatulence during the festive period. It’s not just bad flatulence that causes distress over Christmas, 40% of people said they felt tired or run down with the biggest causes being excessive eating, rich food, the stress of shopping, the change in weather and drinking alcohol.

Even though the traditional festive foods and drinks cause digestive issues many of us can’t refuse the Christmas classics and over indulging in them, well it’s only once a year after all!

Here are our top tips to help you to maintain a healthy gut over Christmas so you can enjoy Christmas and be happy!

  1. Eat more whole foods - a variety of fruit and vegetables, pulses, nuts and wholegrains feed healthy bacteria in your gut. (If your diet is low in fibre, a sudden increase can cause wind and bloating. Minimise this by making gradual changes and drink extra water).
  2. Avoid antibiotics if possible, but if you really need them, make sure you eat lots of foods that boost your microbes afterwards like fermented cheese and live yoghurt.
  3. Have a run of sugar and alcohol free days in the run up to the festive season.
  4. Manage your stress. Exercise, meditation, mindfulness can all help.
  5. Make life easier. We know it’s a hectic period so make healthier living a little easier and take a daily supplement. There are lots of good options available, including Bimuno which promotes the growth of ‘good’ bacteria in your gut
