Why Bimuno Is Different
Bimuno® is the result of intensive research & development including peer reviewed, clinical trials conducted in collaboration with the University of Reading’s Food Microbial Sciences Unit and other globally recognized research institutes.
Bimuno® is a multi-functional supplement based around a unique and patent-protected, galacto-oligosaccharide formulation. It is the only 2nd generation prebiotic and as such offers additional functionality over and above its prebiotic (increasing and strengthening of beneficial bacteria) and bifidogenic (increasing and strengthening immunity boosting Bifidobacteria) effect. In scientific studies and clinical trials it has demonstrated the most powerful bifidogenic effect compared to other prebiotics.
In addition, it has the following effect:
• Immune modulation: This is as a result of action bringing about a change in the microflora as well as the direct effect of its novel GOS structures1,2.
• Anti-pathogenic activity: Inhibition of pathogenic bacteria as well as a direct action preventing attachment and invasion of specific gastro-intestinal pathogens in the small intestine. These pathogens include Enteropathogenic E.coli and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium3,4.

The diagram below demonstrates Bimuno’s powerful prebiotic and bifidogenic effect compared to 1st generation prebiotics1. The Bimuno effect is at least twice as strong. Bimuno’s superior prebiotic and bifidogenic effect was also demonstrated at half the normal dose (3.6g, 1.37g of which is the active ingredient).

This diagram shows that, at the full as well as half daily dose, Bimuno’s powerful prebiotic and bifidogenic effect is demonstrated with seven days1. This speed of action is unique to Bimuno.

The diagram below shows that the administration of Bimuno® in oral challenge animal model(s) prior to them being infected with Salmonella Typhimurium (SL1344) reduces the colonisation of this pathogen in the five organs sampled. This resulted in reduction in pathology as well as a reduction in clinical symptoms4.

This diagram shows a ligated ileal gut loop animal model inoculated with Salmonella Typhimurium (SL1344). In the absence of Bimuno® (fig. A) there are signs of bacterial adherence and invasion into enterocytes↓ and marked signs of pathology¡. These signs are absent in the presence of Bimuno (fig B) indicating that Bimuno® provides protection against this pathogen4.

In summary, scientific and clinical trials have demonstrated that Bimuno® has:
- The most powerful prebiotic and bifidogenic effect
- Even at lose doses of 1.37g of active ingredient
- And works within seven days
- Unique anti-pathogenic activity
This unique functionality, over probiotics and other prebiotics, is available via our patented Bimuno product range, specially formulated to offer significant benefits to your patients and customers in the areas of digestive, immune and travel health.

How Bimuno® Works
1. Bimuno® reaches the small intestine intact
2. In the small intestine it inhibits the adhesion of GI pathogenic bacteria via the action of blocking their attachment to the epithelium. This helps prevent pathogenic colonisation1,2
3. In the large intestine Bimuno® is fermented by specific beneficial bacteria belonging to the Bifidobacterium genus. The result is a change in pH balance which favours the growth of beneficial bacteria at the expense of pathogenic bacteria, resulting in a positive change in the microflora3
4. As a result of the selective fermentation specific immunity boosting bifidobacteria are energised3
5. There is then a direct positive effect on the innate immune system resulting from an increase in phagocytosis and NK cell activity4
6. There is also a direct positive effect on the adaptive immune system resulting from the increase in anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 and reduction in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and IL-1β, and TNF–α4
7. The net effect is an enhancement in gut health and wellbeing.

The Bimuno® Range
Bimuno® Prebiotic Powder was the first Bimuno® product to become available in the UK, in March 2007, and was formulated to provide added functionality over probiotic supplements and 1st generation prebiotics.
August 2010 saw the UK launch of additional Bimuno® products designed to meet the digestive, travel and immune health needs of consumers and patients. These are: Bimuno IBAID, Bimuno IMMUNAID and Bimuno TRAVELAID. Whereas all of these offer added value benefits, Bimuno TRAVELAID offers a previously unmet need as it is the only product clinically proven to help prevent Travellers’ Diarrhoea.
