Symptoms of a Weak Immune System

Find out about the symptoms of a weak immune system - do you have an impaired immune system? Read about the signs here.

You’re likely to know if you have a weak immune system. You’ll experience recurrent infections, such as lingering coughs and colds that you can’t fight off, or that reappear just when you think you’re getting better.

Once your immune system is weakened to this point, it’s hard to break the cycle. Repeated infections damage your body’s natural defences further each time, meaning your body is less and less able to respond and recover.

The effectiveness of your immune system is influenced by many factors that affect your body and its health as a whole.

Psychological and emotional problems, stress, poor diet, malnutrition and a sedentary lifestyle can all result in lowered immune system function.

How to build up your immune system

Diet is the first weapon in tackling a low immune system. Your diet should be rich in naturally nutritious wholefoods, such as fruits, vegetables, wholegrains, beans and nuts. Ensure you’re eating the right amount of protein and cut back on fats and refined sugars.

Try to include more of the following foods in your diet:

  • Carotene-rich foods, such as squash, carrots, yams, sweet potatoes, dark greens, tomatoes and red peppers
  • Cabbage family vegetables, such as broccoli, cabbages, cauliflower and kale
  • Flavonoid-rich berries
  • Garlic
  • Jerusalem artichoke

The right diet can include incorporating the new generation of prebiotics into your everyday routine. These feed and increase the good immune supporting bacteria in the gut.

You can also help strengthen a weak immune system by doing at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise a day and get enough sleep – six to eight hours if you can.
